[2020 KF Korea Workshop] EAI ACE CHALLENGE Orientation

The KF Korea Workshop is hosted by the Korea Foundation and organized by the East Asia Institute to promote and share understanding of Korean social, political, and economic issues among international residents in Korea.
The orientation session consisted of opening and welcoming remarks by Seong-in Kim, executive vice-president of the Korea Foundation, and by Yul Sohn, president of the East Asia Institute. The speeches were followed by an information session regarding the overall program for 2020 KF Korea Workshop: EAI ACE CHALLENGE.

hello everyone um welcome to 2020 kf korea workshop my name is hayong kim and i'm a research associate at the east asia institute we received over 500 applications this year so really congratulations on making it to the program and we look forward to having this program with you we have a very brief orientation plan for you today and we will begin with opening and welcoming remarks from executive vice president zhongin kim of korea foundation and president yule son of the east asia institute followed by
some program outlines good afternoon everyone it is my honor and great pleasure to welcome you all on behalf of the korea foundation the host of this program the kf korea workshop aims to provide participants with a better understanding of various aspects of korean culture and society i would like to extend my sincere gratitude to each of the participants here who came from countries all over the world as well as to our guest speakers whom you will meet throughout the program its launch in 1991 the korea foundation
has been at the forefront of korea's international exchanges and public diplomacy these include people-to-people exchanges in the fields of academia art and culture the media and policy-making to name but few this exchanges promote friendship and goodwill between korea and the rest of the world and enhance korea's soft power on the world stage to promote better understanding of korea the korea foundation regularly hosts lectures and workshops for foreign residents in korea the kf korea workshop was
launched in 2015 and represents one of our most important programs to provide participants with in-depth analogy on current issues in korean society the foundation is greatly pleasing that this workshop has proven so popular and now plays vital role to enhance foreign residents understanding of various aspects of korea although this year the korea foundation workshop takes a a digital program and we are unable to meet in person i truly hope the workshop will prove useful for you to deeply understand korean society
once again i would like to extend my sincere gratitude to all the participants here today as well as to our partner organization for this workshop the east asia institute thank you very much i wish you all the best good afternoon my name is your son president of the east asia institute eai and a yonsei university professor it is my great pleasure and honor to give the welcoming remarks for the 2020 kf korea workshop the east asia institute was founded in 2002 as an independent think tank in korea since then it has grown into a
vast knowledge network of global experts and scholars who patrick in in research not only to korea but also east asia as a region and the world with aims to nurture further leaders and experts eai hosts various academic and educational programs and the korea i mean kf korea workshop has been one of the key accomplishments this year for the eighth year since uh 2013 eai has partnered with kf to further its intellectual network and embrace diversity and multiculturalism in korea korea may be considered as largely
homogeneous country but vast number of international individuals currently reside within the nation and the number actually continue to increase with each and every year according to the south korean ministry of justice the number of foreigners residing in korea topped 2.5 million for the first time by the end of last year a sheer seven percent increase from the previous year for the 2.5 million nearly 70 percent identify korea as a destination for the long term and hence a home with the outbreak of
coveted 19 pandemic it is especially important for us to foster cooperation across the borders and promote open-mindedness the kf korea workshop seeks to provide foreign residents in korea a genuine opportunity to deepen its understanding of korea as a nation a culture and society of individuals since its beginning the workshop has grown both in both grow both in size and network grounded upon three pillars of the program namely one academic quest two communicus and three empathicus with these pillars
in mind we hope you learn communicate and emphasize empathize with others during the i mean various uh lectures and activities for 2020 we have uh specially incorporate the theme ace challenge with three different clusters that all together spell out eai cluster e stands for external and domestic affairs offering insight into korea's society politics and diplomacy cluster a stands for arts and culture with lectures on korean art music architecture and literature and cluster i represent industry and i.t
with lectures on korean economy media technology and e-commerce this year received over 500 applications from 75 different nationalities with that i sincerely congratulate all of you for being admitted to the workshops class of 2020. we hope you will walk out of this program with not only a better understanding of korea but also with a handful of colleagues whom you could continue to network with throughout your future endeavors i also like to express my sincere gratitude to all of our speakers as well
as our co-host korea foundation for their support and cooperation thank you all for joining us and we hope that programs lectures and programs will serve us as one more step in your great pursuit of knowledge in korea thank you now move on to the program outline for the 2020kf career workshop our program is based on the ace curriculum with four lectures a conversation with a mentor and a group activity we have clusters eai this year with external and domestic affairs arts and culture and industry and i t
the sessions for cluster e are as follows the sessions for cluster a are as follows and the sessions for cluster i are as follows we also have a conversation with a mentor planned on november 21st starring fabian and petry as for our group activity kf and eai both adhere strictly to government health and safety regulations and we're currently discussing the details of this program um we'll notify you with the details as soon as they're confirmed via email we have a couple of reminders for you one is that you need to attend three out
