[EAI Public Opinion Briefing] The Challenge of Fake News and South Korean Democracy
Editor's Note
The East Asia Institute (EAI) and Korea Research Co., Ltd. conducted a web-based public opinion survey in January 2024 to understand the perceptions of South Korean citizens regarding fake news and disinformation. EAI analyzed the results of this perception survey, visualizing and presenting the implications for political polarization in South Korea and the discrepancies between the extremes of perception regarding fake news (or disinformation). It is analyzed that political polarization in South Korea is characterized by stronger confrontations centered around supporting figures and political parties than ideological opposition, and the perception survey revealed significant differences in how supporters of Yoon Suk-yeol and Lee Jae-myung consume news and perceive fake news.
