Conflicts Between Classes in Modern Korea: Source for Social Development

Abstract:

While conflict is often perceived as a challenge to traditional norms and stability, it also serves as a pathway toward positive change and development essential for societal well-being. This paper examines three types of conflicts that modern Korean society (post-1945) has experienced, primarily focusing on how these conflicts contributed to development and whether a general pattern can be identified. Furthermore, this paper seeks to demonstrate how Korean society can leverage ongoing class conflicts to achieve future development and how to formulate a specific model for Korea.

Constrained Cooperation in South Korea’s Nuclear Power Policy and Its Side Effects

Introduction:

Since the inauguration of GORI No.1 nuclear power plant (NPP) in 1978, the Korean government has actively sought public cooperation on nuclear power plant issues. Despite the Chernobyl incident, policies promoting the extension of nuclear power plants in response to the need for energy diversification were vigorously pursued until the late 1980s. The share of nuclear power in energy supply surpassed that of coal in 1986 and continued to grow thereafter. Anti-nuclear movements were ineffective under the authoritarian government, and when that government was dismantled, discourse on economic development and energy security filled the void.
