[KF-EAI Korea Friendship] Professor Son Yeol of Yonsei University Graduate School of International Studies on ‘Northeast Asian International Affairs and the Challenges of Korean Diplomacy’

The East Asia Institute (EAI), in collaboration with the Korea Foundation (KF), is conducting the KF-EAI Korea Friendship program, an educational and networking initiative for international students residing in Korea.

Professor Son Yeol pointed out that Northeast Asia is currently experiencing various security tensions, and Korea's diplomatic dilemma stems primarily from the escalating tensions between China and the United States due to China's growth. Therefore, he stated that South Korea, as a middle power, must pursue diplomacy that enables peaceful coexistence by assessing its long-term national interests. He particularly emphasized the importance of the capacity to mediate conflict situations and form networks among middle powers, so as not to be dominated by the political logic of great powers. Furthermore, he added that in matters of identity, which are as crucial as economy and security, adopting an approach that pursues collective identity beyond the national unit is important.
