The East Asia Institute (EAI) invited George David Banks, Senior Fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in the United States, to host the 41st Smart Talk Forum on May 20th, under the theme “Problems Facing the U.S. Civil Nuclear Sector.” Senior Fellow Banks argued that the contraction of the civilian nuclear industry could ultimately negatively impact core national interests in the process of establishing global nuclear non-proliferation policies, thereby narrowing the U.S. position and creating difficulties in pursuing environmental policies such as domestic carbon emission reduction programs. Senior Fellow Banks pointed out that U.S. policymakers lack understanding of the growth of the nuclear market, hindering the creation of economic, environmental, and national security benefits. Following the presentation, discussions were held on bilateral and multilateral cooperation measures between South Korea and the U.S. for nuclear non-proliferation and the development of civilian nuclear programs.
