This book consists of empirical research on the voting behavior of South Korean citizens in the 2017 presidential election following the impeachment of the president—an unprecedented event in South Korean political history. The book is the latest in a series of public opinion analysis studies conducted by the East Asia Institute. The EAI has consistently tracked the changes in the Korean electorate, and is analyzing the 19th presidential election in depth amid the trend of electoral politics. Changes in the South Korean electorate including the generational impacts of voters born in the 1960s and the collapse of supporters of the conservative party have reshaped the political landscape of South Korean elections. Based on empirical research, this book reveals that South Korean politics and democracy have entered into a new era, 30 years after democratization in 1987.
