China's Rise, Threat or Opportunity: The Present and Future of China Through Global Public Opinion

Recently, China has rapidly emerged as a new military and economic power on the world stage. The United States and other surrounding stakeholders are debating whether China's rise will be a threat or a new opportunity.

EARS Issue 5, "China's Rise, Threat or Opportunity: The Present and Future of China Through Global Public Opinion" (by Lee Nae-young and Jeong Han-wool), an EAI public opinion analysis working paper series, empirically analyzes the perceptions of stakeholders regarding China's rise based on international public opinion survey data conducted in 2005 and 2006.

In 2006, EAI conducted a "Foreign Perception Survey" of major East Asian and Pacific countries with the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, and has conducted "International Issues Surveys" with BBC, Globescan, Maeil Business Newspaper, and 한국리서치 in 2005 and 2006.

This report diagnoses China's rise from a balanced and complex perspective, rather than a dichotomous view of threat or opportunity, and presents global public opinion's outlook on the future trajectory of China.
